Elastic scattering spectroscopy (ESS) is an in-vivo optical point measurement which, using an appropriate optical geometry, is sensitive to changes in the physical properties of tissue.  Elastic Scattering Spectroscopy (ESS) has been validated with 30+ peer-reviewed publications on clinical studies that show its ability to distinguish malignant from benign tissue, including a recent skin cancer study that used DermaSensor’s technology.

The DermaSensor device emits light particles which penetrate the surface of the lesion to a depth of ~500 microns, and are reflected back to the device. 

Lesions with different morphology, cellular, and subcellular features have different densities. These variations in density (or optical refractive indices) change the way in which light is scattered back to the device. Thus, the device is able to take an “optical biopsy,” to assess tissue morphology for possible malignant features, by measuring how lesions scatter light differently.
